“We are…on our own individual, lonely, heroic journey to discover
who we are, where we are, and what our relationship is to this body,
this life, and this mystery in which we find ourselves.”
Pat Schneider,
How the Light Gets In
Develop your writing style, voice, and craft while discovering what you most
care about. Listening carefully to your inner life and clarifying what is
meaningful to you is at the heart of good writing. I work with all levels,
supporting each writer’s goals and improving craft in giant steps. We use
inventive prompts, mentor texts/guidance and seminar-style workshopping
to facilitate discussion, focusing on how to amplify meaning and substance.
“Every single writer grows under her guidance,” says one of her students.
Her student reviews are consistently given the highest ratings.
Together, we’ll:
* Use various methods to bring forth a multitude of ideas, themes, and
stories from your life and history to mine for writing in this class and in the
future.
*Listen and leap! Writing is an act of discovery, not repetition.
*Discern—separating the gems from the noise. Writing reveals the connection between the personal and the universal.
*Crafting our words to make them meaningfully connect to others.
What you’ll need: It takes honesty and courage to try and wrestle the truth
of experience onto the page. Please bring a writing pad and pen, and, if
you have one, a laptop computer.
PS: The discipline of writing is 80% momentum. We may continue the
workshop through the winter if people want and maybe, just maybe, there’ll
be an on-going writing group birthed from our time together.
