Methow Creative Aging Volunteer Training

Methow Creative Aging Volunteer Training - No Art Experience Necessary!

Methow Creative Aging is a Dementia-Friendly Arts Engagement Program -

Volunteers participating in this free, three hour training will learn to lead four art activities while employing methods to promote a joyful experience for care partners and people living with dementia or other challenges. We will go over the nuts and bolts of setting up a comfortable working space, putting together an art kit, facilitating the activities, adaptive assistance techniques, communication, and methods for ensuring success.

The Methow Creative Aging volunteer trainings will lead to opportunities to bring hands-on arts expression into Jamie’s Place adult residence, at Memory Care Café events, and with additional training, into individual homes for people living with dementia and their care partners.

Register HERE

Why Arts-based Dementia Care? There is much research that points to the act of making art in helping a person to process anxiety, anger, grief and loss as increased memory loss, confusion, and physical limitations progress with dementia. Our program trains the care partner or volunteer to work with the individual experiencing dementia, building a relationship, and customizing artmaking sessions to meet the individual’s specific needs, interests, and changing abilities as the disease progresses.

Methow Creative Aging is a multi-faceted program designed to bring hands-on creative expression to both in-home and group care settings, using the senses to stimulate meaning and purpose, self-awareness, and empowerment through the arts. The program also offers a schedule of Methow Memory Cafés at The Confluence Art gallery that present hands-on artmaking along with music, art discussions, and other creative and cultural social experiences in a sensory sensitive environment. These free, community-based arts programs for persons living with dementia and their care partners hold tremendous potential for reducing isolation, increasing cognitive, social, and creative engagement while improving overall quality of life.

About your instructor:
Methow Creative Aging is led by local artist Janet Fagan. With degrees from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, The University of PA, and the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, Janet brings her years of experience practicing art and working as a teaching artist with the Creative Aging team at the Frye Art Museum to Methow at Home. In addition to her work with adults living with dementia, Janet has a deep history in museum education, drawing, painting and printmaking instruction. Janet is a working artist living in Mazama and her work can be seen at the Winthrop Gallery and the Confluence in Twisp. Learn more about Janet and her artistic practice at JanetFagan.com

Petanque (French Bocce Ball)

PLAY PETANQUE !
What is Petanque ( pronounced PET-TONK ) ? You may have heard of, or even played Bocce,
which comes from Italy. Petanque is played very much the same way and originated in France. The main difference is the size of the balls used. Where Bocce balls are large like a softball, Petanque balls are smaller, like a baseball. It can be played with as few as two or with teams of up to three a side. The objective is to take turns trying to roll or toss the balls or boules, as close as possible to a smaller target ball, called the jack. One point is given to the team for each ball closer than the opponents closest ball.

MAH members Paul and Jacque Smith introduced the game to the community about ten years ago and formed a club that plays on two courts they built in Winthrop’s Heckendorn Park. Petanque can be played by any age or ability, you don’t need to be young and fit! The hardest part is picking up your balls after each turn ends. It is very casual and social. The courts sit in a quiet shaded area of the park, near the river, with a permanent bench at each end of the court.

Weekly sessions to learn the game and practice will be conducted by Paul and Jacque with
hopes to start a weekday morning MAH Petanque group. The two courts can accommodate up six persons each. Equipment will be provided, but players may want to own their own set of balls. Petanque rules etc. can be found at www.wikihow.com/Play-Petanque

Matter of Balance Fall Prevention Class

Bring Your Self and Your Life Into Greater Balance

This 8 Week Series called Matter of Balance starts October 22nd at The Twisp Grange!

Many older adults experience concerns about falling that lead to restriction of their activities, but falling does not need to be accepted as a natural part of aging. Falls can be prevented through education and planning. There are many things you can do to help decrease the risk of falls and maintain your independence, and falls prevention programs like A Matter of Balance can help.

A Matter of Balance is a nationally recognized program designed to reduce concerns about falling and encourage physical activity.

Participants learn to:

  • View falls as something they can control

  • Set goals and increase their activity levels

  • Make changes around the home to reduce fall risks

  • Exercise to increase strength and balance

  • Become proactive self-managers in reducing risk for falls

A Matter of Balance can help you if:

  • You have fallen in the past or are concerned about falling

  • You don't do some things you enjoy because you are afraid you might fall

  • You would like to be more flexible, stronger, and have better balance

About Your Instructors:
Jan Kittleson is a retired geriatric Occupational Therapist who is passionate about empowering people to live their best lives. Preventing falls is one major way of accomplishing that goal. Jan is the Vice President of Methow At Home's board, and has been trained in this important fall prevention program.

Tracy Sprauer is the Education Manager for Methow At Home and she is also trained as a SAIL instructor. She has been an education instructor at multiple levels, enjoys working with people, and believes that this course will help people to age in place with dignity and grace.

Volunteer With Methow At Home

Local volunteers play a vital role in carrying out the mission of Methow At Home, showing up each day to serve our older neighbors.

Day after day, our volunteers, often members themselves, make a difference by cleaning, cooking, driving, or just bringing a friendly smile.
Our volunteer team makes it possible for our elders to safely age in place.
